eXtensible Reference Model
A development coming from the VCG's experience in pilot projects with members is the extension of the VCG's Business Process Transformation Framework to inlclude the XRM's.
The VCG’s eXtensible Reference Model (XRM) provides a universal approach to normalized process dictionaries by offering our members a ‘clean slate’ framework in which proprietary process models may be captured and stored for reuse. As a neutral entity, the VCG acts as a resource for pre-engineered best practice frameworks and as a marketplace for others to discover and use these process dictionaries.
A Translation Guideline is required in order for model exchange to take place. Please contact Scott Palmer at +1 412 487 2922 to find out more about this program.
The Translation Guideline involves the concept of organizing proprietary content into the VCG Framework process reference taxonomy where each element appears only once and inherits its definition from the hierarchical position within that taxonomy. Following the Framework process reference taxonomy, we can define the class model for storing and managing the content of the normalized dictionary enabling dictionary extensibility.
EXtensible Reference Models follow taxonomy specific to organizations and/or purpose. When a value stream is modeled using elements from normalized dictionaries, they represent all possible flows within that scenario context. Since all the elements have specific relationships, associations between elements are known and are very useful for both analysis and run time execution. Further, expressing, or translating those value stream models into some common XML schema would enable semantic interoperability between process modeling and execution tools.

When modeling value streams any element from any XRM dictionary is useful as long as: Dictionaries follow the same class structure; Elements have normalized definitions; Dictionaries are adding different levels of specificity; and Terminology is applicable to the context of the value chain.
EXtensible Reference Model Dictionaries can be created to provide company, industry and/or domain specific activity models. XRM models are loosely coupled to provide flexibility while maintaining context to the overarching VCG Framework.

@Max ~ VCG thinks in value chain configurations. Typically, we find there are 10-15 key VC configurations that an organization needs to focus on. We have worked in many verticals and we have yet to be unable to rationalize a body of process knowledge into our Framework. Putting all the disparate process capture into the VCG Framework will accelerate your project deliverables and allow for good improvement analysis.
Is there one for government bodies, i.e. public sector services?
VCG has a lot of content that can be and is used for professtional services. Also, professional services material can be rationalized into the VCG Framework making proprietary XRM's possible. See what Oliver Wight has done here - http://www.oliverwight-americas.com/our_approach/bptf.htm.
Does an XRM Dictionary for the Professional Services industry (Consulting) exist?
Skip, the VCG owns a baseline for Financial Services processes. Those interested in this should contact me.
