Compassion International is a growing organization serving children in countries around the word. In order to manage its opportunities for growth it adopted the Value Chain Group’s Value Reference Model (VRM) as the foundation for its business semantics, to describe its business processes and produce a component business model to set the stage for internal communication as well as ultimately a service-oriented architecture IT implementation. Compassion’s model provides value to the business by clearly defining the configuration of activities into value chains and by associating systems and data with specific activities within the value chain. This basis has allowed Compassion to align other techniques and tools like Business Process Model Notation (BPMN), Sparx Enterprise Architect and wikis based on the VRM to inform discussions regarding change management, performance management and project portfolio management and service-oriented design.
